Hi

I just found this place and thought I'd ask my question

For a number of reasons, both physical and emotional our daughter has been unable to attend grade 9 at her high school on a regular basis this year and we are actively pursuing medical treatment on both fronts but in the meantime we believe it is in our daughter's best interest to continue studying at home.

The guidance councelllor at her high school is aware of our situation and in discussions with her she mentioned AMDEC as a possible source for our daughter's continued education while at home. She also said she needed a medical certificate excusing my daughter from attending regular day classes at the school before she could recommend enrollment in AMDEC.

My question is simply this...is this requirement the policy of the Board of Education or the Ministry of Education and if so is there documentation of this policy I can access somewhere.

As of today (Nov 05 / 08) the Ottawa Board has decided that schools will provide a home study course as their first option and only with a defined medical diagnosis and definitive return date.

AMDEC or similar Board funded E learning centres will only be considered as a first option if the school can not provide said home study course.

I don't know very much about AMDEC, having only shared a few emails between me and the guidance counsellor in the past couple of weeks. I discovered, as you have been discussing, that I must register my daughter with a local school in order for her to take courses through AMDEC. There didn't seem to be any room for discussion here, nor any attempt on her part to discover any loopholes to AMDEC's advantage.

I wondered whether it could be possible for a group of homeschoolers to register as a private school (I say this having no idea what the legalities of this are) and through that co-operative group gain needed permission letters for their children to gain access to AMDEC's courses.

... just a thought...

A bit late to this discussion, but just to let you know that we did successfully register a student with AMDEC this January, without registering locally. (We tried with the Toronto District School Board, but were told they would only allow for limited registration for online courses and most classes being in a regular day school. For various reasons, this is not an option for us.)

However, this student has never attended an Ontario school - and previously lived in another province - so the transcript from the previous school was forwarded directly to AMDEC. Our current plan is to use the summer school programme in the local school board to catch up on Ontario high school credits, but to re-register with AMDEC each year - until such time as attending a local school becomes a practical option.

Kary, I'm curious - how are you going to enroll in summer school in the TDSB without being registered with them?

We're TDSB too, and AMDEC enrolled us directly because they know the TDSB refuses. We didn't even have to try. So there's no problem there at all.
