The following was received from Ryerson University, via email, in late 2007. This is a draft policy that they are currently working on and were kind enough to share. Please remember it is just a draft, is subject to change, and is an internal document kindly made public to help students prepare to apply to Ryerson.

RYERSON UNIVERSITY
HOME SCHOOLED APPLICANTS

Admission Requirements
Ryerson encourages and is pleased to consider applications for admission from home schooled candidates.

Home schooled applicants do not require completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, but are required to provide official evidence of academic achievement in secondary education, as follows:

-From Ontario, completion six Grade 12 U/M courses, including program-specific subject prerequisites is required. The minimum average required by Ryerson University is 70%.
Alternately, applicants may present equivalent credentials from other Canadian provinces or final results in Advanced Placement (AP) or Advanced Level courses in the General Certificate Education (GCE) examinations.
-Results of standardized tests such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) with a minimum score of 550 (Verbal) and 550 (Math) or a composite ACT score of 24, are strongly recommended. (All test result minimum scores are currently under review).

(Applicants should note that higher averages and subject prerequisite grades may be required as a result of competition, and will vary by program.)

Many Ryerson programs consider non-academic factors such as interview, auditions, selection tests, essays, portfolios, etc. in the selection process, in addition to academic criteria and history.

Application Process

Home schooled candidates may apply on the appropriate application available via the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) (www.ouac.on.ca). Home schooled candidates must identify themselves as such to the Director of Admissions to expedite and ensure the appropriate processing and assessment of their application.

HOME-SCHOOLED APPLICANTS

Admission Requirements

Ryerson is pleased to consider applications for admission from home-schooled candidates who
satisfy the requirements listed below. Admission to Ryerson programs is competitive and
selection is based on academic achievement. Many Ryerson programs also consider non-academic
factors such as interviews, auditions, selection tests, essays, portfolios, etc. in addition to
academic criteria and history. For more information about “Grades-Plus” programs, visit
www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/admission/overview/nonacademicrequirements.

Home-Schooled Applicants from Ontario

Ryerson University does not require completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
or equivalent from home-schooled applicants provided a letter is submitted by the applicant
indicating they have been home-schooled to the Grade 11 level. However, evidence of academic
achievement in secondary education is required as follows:

o From Ontario, completion of six Grade 12 U/M courses (offered by an Ontario Ministry of
Education inspected school), including program-specific subject prerequisites is required.
o A minimum overall average of 70% in six Grade 12 U or M courses (or equivalent)
establishes eligibility for admission; subject to competition individual programs may
require higher averages.
o The specific Grade 12 U/M (or equivalent) subject prerequisites and minimum grades
required vary by program. A minimum of 60% is required in each of the program specific
subject requirements; subject to competition individual programs may require higher
grades.
o For those programs that require a Grade 11 U/M or Grade 12 U Mathematics or Science
course, the course must be completed via an Ontario Ministry of Education inspected
school.
o The Grade 12 U/M courses may be completed via on-line learning, night school, day
school, correspondence or any combination thereof, provided the school offers credits
towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Home-Schooled Applicants from other Canadian Provinces

Applicants who have completed equivalent qualifications from other Canadian provinces will be
considered provided the studies satisfy provincial requirements. See Ryerson’s Equivalent
Standing Guidelines at www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/admission/overview.

Home-Schooled Applicants from the United States

Applicants who have completed home-schooled studies in the United States will be considered
provided the studies have been completed and a high school diploma issued by a school that is
recognized by an accrediting body acceptable to Ryerson University. See Ryerson’s Equivalent
Standing Guidelines at www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/admission/overview.

Other Considerations

o Ryerson will also consider final results in Advanced Placement (AP) examinations as well
as the International/General Certificate of Secondary Education/Ordinary Level subjects
(IGCSE/GCSE/O Levels) and the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced
Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced (A) Level subjects.
o SAT Reasoning with a minimum score of 550 in each SAT component or a composite ACT
score of 24 is strongly recommended. SAT Subject Tests are also considered.

Please note that Ryerson University does not provide individual educational assessments for
home-schooled applicants.

Application Process

Home-schooled candidates may apply on the appropriate application available via the Ontario
Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) (www.ouac.on.ca). Home-schooled candidates must
identify themselves as such to Ryerson’s Director of Admissions to expedite and ensure the
