Thanks for popping in!

If you're looking specifically for Ontario homeschool information, be sure to visit Sarah Rainsberger's University Admissions Blog for Homeschoolers in Ontario.

For more general information about getting into university in Canada (with or without a high school diploma!), visit University Admissions . ca . This site describes all the ways you can get into university in Canada and has information on all Canadian universities.

This isn't a high traffic message board but you are welcome to add information and ask questions regarding Ontario University Admission policies for Homeschooled and other non-traditional students. Click the "Recent Activity" link near the top right to see the latest posts. There's not a lot of posting, but I do reply to all questions!

As you navigate the university admission process as a homeschooler, mature student or anyone without the traditional academic credentials required for normal university entrance, I hope the policies here will be useful. If you notice something has changed or is out of date, don't hesitate to log in and update the information.

The following was received via email from Lakehead University in late 2007. Please note that the following is a description of common practice and not a formal policy which has been kindly made available to the public in order to assist in preparing to apply to Lakehead. Contact the university for any and all definitive decisions.

Lakehead University has a practice in regards to home schooled applicants - no official policy as of yet. However, we have actually just submitted a proposal for our home school admissions policy. We consulted with a number of local home schooling parents and did look at what other universities are doing. The new policy will the reviewed and tweaked so it is not yet ready for public consumption but in essence we hope to introduce requirements such as, a portfolio and an admission essay. This type of requirement will enable students applying to Arts programs to get away from having to submit an SAT and/or grade 12 u courses. Science students will most likely have to take grade 12 u's or submit SAT II exam results for Math and Science but we are moving forward. We also hope to be able to offer scholarships to our home schooled applicants but again - all of these changes are in the preliminary stage.

Our practice for home schooled applicants has been to consider each applicant individually and usually they would be required to submit information on the curriculum they followed, a transcript from a ministry approved school for 2 grade 12 U courses with an average of 80% or above and/or submit an SAT score. Applicants to Science/Math based programs would have to show grade 12 U's in Math and Science specifically to be considered.

I will keep your email on file and let you know when changes have occurred. Any home schooled person who is thinking of applying to Lakehead should contact our office for specific information for their individual application.

Again we hope to have a fair and comprehensive policy in place within the year.

Best Regards,
